I am a beekeeper in Missouri and this blog is offensive to me and the beekeeping group I am part of. I can say that in the four years that I've had my hive(s), I've never used chemicals or do anything that was listed in this blog. As a matter of fact, I built a pollinator garden 4 years ago, and I let bees do what bees do without molesting them. I even wait on them to move if I'm mowing the lawn and they're on a flower in my path.
There's only a couple of instances where I will step in; swarm season and winter where I surround the hive with foam to keep them warmer. I have invested alot of time, money and heartbreak over my few years and I love my girls. So please don't include those of us that are hobby beekeepers in with the big boys.

My take away is I will not purchase honey based watercolor or eat honey.. I thought it was just common sense for bee keepers to take good care of their bees-I was wrong. We have a very active hive in an empty lot behind us and we plant bee & butterfly friendly plants all over our back yard. Thank you for this great article.

In reply to Amy Katz from Veggies Save The Day.

Thanks Amy, Your right commercial beekeeping has gotten us into a difficult place! It's important to raise awareness of the connection with commercial beekeeping and fruit and nut production production. Currently 99% of the food that is made possible by "pollination services" is pollinated by bees that are not treated well. Our monoculture production of fruits and nuts bares as much responsibility for the mistreatment of honeybees health as a misguided commercial beekeepers.

For the extra cautious or concerned, there are commercial vegan honey alternatives and substitutes that do not use bees at all. Two examples are given here: http://www.ladyqs.com/vegan-bee-free-honey-review/

Food innovation can hopefully make this a moot point.
